It is preferable to register the death in the district that it has occurred (to avoid delays). We would be happy to make the appointment, arrange transport and accompany you during this process.
During your appointment, the registrar will take the doctor's certificate and any medical cards you may have in your possession for the deceased. You may find it useful to take with you the birth certificate of the deceased as it can help with additional information required.
The registrar will then issue you with a death certificate. You will require copies of the death certificate to notify various organisations (see below). Copies can be obtained at any time, but they are normally slightly cheaper if you purchase them at the time of issue.
The registrar can also help you register the death with the government's Tell Us Once scheme which reports a death to several government organisations in one go (including passports, driving licence, benefits and pensions). However, you will still need to notify other organisations directly (for example council tax, banks, credit cards, loans, savings, shares, premium bonds etc).
At the end of your appointment (usually around 30 minutes), the registrar will hand you a green form which should be passed to us (or your chosen funeral director) as soon as possible.
Below we provide details of the local Register Offices should you wish to contact them directly.
